I normally love Stein's writing style. She never plops the action on a plate and hands it to you like a scoop of cafeteria mashed potatoes. She circles around, gradually clueing you in to who these people are and what they're doing. It heightens the tension and rewards slow, careful reading.However.
There are times in any narrative when straightforward storytelling would give more of a sense of urgency to the plot than meandering navel gazing. I have no problem with first person POV and Stein does it better than most, but there were times when I felt like hacking through the heroine's inner monologue with a machete just to figure out what the hell was going on. (At one point, the prose was so overwrought and unclear that I actually thought Bea had lost a hand!) Other people have mentioned the dearth of dialogue, and I have to agree. Serge's motivation was particularly murky because he never had anything to say.
Bottom line: I really admire Stein's work and I'll definitely snatch up her books as soon as they come out, but this one felt a bit padded.

I adored this novel. Yes, the narrative voice is very distinct and Beatrix's POV is intense. But the story and the emotions really grabbed me. I love Charlotte Stein. She's not for everyone, but the way she expands one moment to make it feel like a thousand highlights the depth of the love stories she's telling. I found the neurotic heroine and insecure hero really endearing. This is one of my favorites of Stein's.
I adored the love story. I very much love the arc of the heroine's character. The sexy times are so tender and hot with intensity of young love. The hero is great and not a man ho.
I love Charlotte Stein's New Adult writing because it captures the ache of love during that time of life and the finding of oneself mixed in with accepting oneself.
The book falls flats with some unneeded drama and some loose threads of story lines but overall I liked it very much.
I was given this book for my honest review (even though I forgot that and bought a copy lol). So, there you have it.
I'm a big fan of Charlotte Stein's writing, and she's on my automatic buy list. This wasn't my favorite book of hers, but I still enjoyed it. It reminded me in some ways of another of hers with a very sheltered heroine, but Bea turns out to be very different - she's unique! I've read a lot of books with tattooed fighters as the hero, but this actually felt a little different. Also, the way Stein details her characters, her beautiful writing, the way she writes scenes of any intimacy, they all make this book memorable for those reasons alone. Still one of my favorite writers in this genre. )
I love Charlotte Stein’s style of writing. Her stories are always a little gritty, strange and offbeat. The sex is super spicy erotic, but the characters are always damaged but interesting. Rough but intellectual. Her stories are never glamorous fantasies but sort of dark sexual film noirs with damage people.
There is a sort of clean informality to her writings. Beatrix comes from a family where she was beaten and is now free but somehow in hiding. Serge is a street fighter who says like recognizes like.
They become obsessed with each other but both of them are functionally virgins so basically they make out, play with each other forever before they have sex. These are beautiful and erotic scenes. Moreover, then, of course, he breaks her heart. Won't spoil it, but I loved the ending.
I usually love Charlotte Stein, but Never Loved didn't really work for me. If you've read Stein before, you know her "voice" tends toward stream of consciousness. I've never had a problem with that before, but here for some reason I just found it tiresome and hard to follow. I also found the plot of this book was full of holes. The heroine and her brother were abused by their dad, but got away from him somehow, came to America for some reason, have tons of money for reasons that were either not explained or which I may have skipped in my impatience with the afore-mentioned rambling stream of consciousness, plus there's some gangster/loanshark types that threaten the HEA. Because reasons.
But, as usual, Stein writes hawt smex.
3.5 Beatrix was emotionally and physically abused by her father, until he died. Now she's in college trying to be normal. While looking for her brother, she meets Serge a big, rough street fighter. She falls for him instantly and he for her. This is a dark tale and Bea's internal monologue was annoying because it was grandiose and attempted to be humorous, it didn't fit with the story. After the first few pages she slowed down the crazy internal thoughts and story got better. Serge doesn't feel he is good enough for Bea and pushs her away but she is steadfast and won't give up on him. The sex is nice and dirty. They were sweet together and made each other feel loved. Not very deep, just a simple love story.
I didn't like this author's writing style. I finished the book and while I didn't feel unsatisfied, I wasn't completely satisfied either. The writing style threw me off a lot and made getting into the story really hard. Sometimes I found myself so confused by what was trying to be conveyed and who was talking. I wish there was more details about the hero and heroines past. I wish there was a better description of the heroines looks. I did enjoy the plot for the most part but again, I wish their were more details. I gave this one 3 stars because of the potential that was there.
